Rollicking Through The Reader: Sweet Collective

partitioned iraq fantasy.gif

Today's Reader food section focuses on what sounds to us like a really great idea: three bakers opening a bakery together, and operating it federally - three businesses, one roof. It actually sounds a lot like the Iraq partition plan, but instead of bloodshed, cupcakes! Sweet Collective, opening in the next few weeks just north of Lincoln Square, will house a cakemaker, a trufflista, and an ice cream maestra (we know it's sexist to use gender non-neutral pronouns, but they're so linguistically lyrical!) The businesses would likely be too small to survive on their own, but collectivizing will provide a mutually supportive financial and emotional system that greatly increases each baker's chance of success. A capitalism of little socialisms. Hurray!

Just want to be the first to say I went in this weekend, and Sweet Collective is a cute small store with each of the three items (pastry, chocolates, ice creams) on display. So, of course, I tried everything. I loved the mini creme brulees on cookies. A good vanilla flavor in there. Plus, many small pastries, so you can try a lot - which I did. Ice creams and chocolates not too sweet, which is refreshing. Both feature unusual flavors, like chocolates based on neighborhoods (Chinatown is sesame and orange). Folks coming in seemed to have found out about the space on a website called Daily Candy. Kind of an out of the way spot, but across from Hidden Cove (for all you karaoke fans). You can test out the sorbet flavors, and candy samples were on the counter. My kind of place. Oh, must mention the mini chocolate caramel tarts. What a Caramello wants to be. Yum!
