Dosa-Mania
Up in New York, Times dining critic Peter Meehan is raving about the dosas he found at a Hindu temple in Queens. Dosas (pictured) are massive South Indian lentil-flour pancakes stuffed with fillings and served with dipping sauces. The most popular kinds are potato masala dosas, butter dosas (stuffed with, yup, butter) and gunpowder dosas which skip the fillings and instead mix hot chili peppers into the lentil batter. Here in Philadelphia, a few of the better known destinations for dosas are Kashmir Garden and Azaad in Northeast Philly, Mainline Jewel of India in Ardmore and Uduppidosa in Bensalem. Although we're unaware of any Hindu temples with a sideline business in takeout dosas in Philadelphia (and if you know of any, tell us about them!), we've always been fans of the Greek lunches (Fridays only) at St. George's Church in Center City and of the pierogi sales at churches in Manayunk and the Northeast.
