Rick D.: RIP
We just got the news that Tritone owner Rick D. passed away of an apparent heart attack last weekend. Rick opened Tritone, his first restaurant, in 2001 after a long career booking shows in Philadelphia's punk and indie rock scenes. The combination restaurant/bar/music venue was best known for an extensive entertainment calendar that would combine everything from touring gypsy bands to DJ nights to experimental free jazz to hard-core punk. Over at Philebrity, Joey Sweeney is reminiscing about Rick D.'s history. Plain Parade's Sara Sherr also has plenty to say and there is an online memorial on MySpace.
Rick was only 40 years old.
For our part, we moved to Philadelphia the week after Tritone opened. Rick was one of the first people we met here and was always good with a sarcastic one-liner and scaring the hell out of our friends. Cheap pierogies and a good jukebox were always good things in discovering a new city—Tritone will still be around, but it won't be the same. RIP.
