Chink's Steaks Expanding To S. Philly

Any lingering fears you might have about South Philadelphia's inevitable gentrification can be put aside for the moment. Over at the Daily News, Dan Gross brings us word that Northeast Philly's most politically incorrect restaurant, Chink's Steaks, is expanding to South Philly:

Chink's Steaks (6030 Torresdale) is taking over Tugboat Annie's (901 S. Columbus) and opening a smaller take-out-only Chink's Steaks there in late March, says Chink's owner Joseph Groh. He takes over the property March 1 and says he will be up and running by the beginning of Phillies season. He may put in some outside tables. Groh says he's not too worried about any backlash about the shop's name, which had drawn ire from Asian-Americans several years back.

Chink's was the childhood nickname given to the restaurant's late former owner Samuel Sherman.

Score another one for Philly race relations.

Score one?

And here's the instant answer to their "founder's nickname" excuse:

" he had slanty eyes. we are jewish. we're far from being racist"

can I open a bike shop and call it " kike's bikes?" as i eat my liver and pick pennies off the ground with my claws?

The name of this restaurant is very offensive to Asian Americans.

It's just like calling a restaurant "Nigger's" just because the original owner happened to be dark skinned.

Mr Groh

To keep everyone happy, may I suggest the simple name change to Chunks Steaks, Chunky Steaks, or Chunky's Steaks and retain the same logo.

Please let it go. There is more in this world to be pissed at than a name. This owner is a honest businessman who pleases everyone of every color. Heck, he's open to 8pm but yet most times stays well past opening hours to feed all those who come in for a cheesesteak. Where were all those haters back in the mid-50s and 60s when racism was hotter than ever? This store has been around since 1949 but it took 50 plus years for someone to bitch?

We can spend our energy do more to clean up Philly and the outragous murder by our youth.

What the?

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA. don't change the name to chunks then you'll have all the fatty groups pisiing and moaning. What the hell is wrong with this country? We have groups of people just waiting around to be offended. Oh my last name is YIP yep, I'm watered down chinese, I love the name chinks,it's great. Whine groups get the hell over yourselves

There already is a restaurant called Hymies and nobody is calling for a name change. I don't care about the name I care less about the whining protesters. When Chink's refuses someone service because of their ethnicity, then we can raise the issue.
