Local Gin Does Good

gin.jpgJunipero Gin just keeps racking up the awards.

Since the Potrero Hill-based Anchor distillery began making small batches of the gin, Junipero has gained a reputation as one of the finest gins in its price range. Take, for example, yesterday's martini-a-thon in the New York Times. The $35 Junipero placed second in the "competition," only finishing behind English stalwart Plymouth:

By contrast, our No. 2 and No. 3 gins emphasized power. The Junipero, made in small quantities by the distilling branch of the Anchor brewery in San Francisco, came on strong with the traditional gin flavors of juniper and citrus, hitting all the right notes, though a little self-consciously.
Rounding out the top five gins: Cadenhead's Old Raj ($50), Seagram's ($15) and Tanqueray ($22). Congratulations to Junipero though; as per the article, we will now refer to a Junipero-laced martini as a "a martini with one eyebrow raised."
