Far Flung Fortune Cookie Correspondents

A newspaper in Australia takes up the case of the invention of the fortune cookie after one of their writers visits the Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory:

China was made aware of the treats only 15 years ago when a US company introduced them as Genuine American Fortune Cookies.

Though there is much argument over the facts, Makoto Hagiwara of Golden Gate Park's Japanese Tea Garden is widely reported as the first person to serve the cookie - based on a Japanese cracker - around the turn of the 20th century.

And in 1983 the Court of Historical Reviews and Appeals ruled San Francisco to be the rightful fortune cookie capital of the world. Which is why I am traipsing down this alley, looking for its birthplace.

Yeah, most people who follow this kind of thing acknowledge that San Francisco is the birthplace of the fortune cookie, but still, it's nice to see journalists from so far afield taking an interest in the local culture.
