Review Digest: Lots Of Duds Today

• Yikes! 1 Bleu gets a not-so-stellar review today. In fact, it's completely panned. The only good things mentioned are the view and the wine. [Miami Herald]

Philippe, on the other hand, gets it right with great upscale Chinese offerings. Their specialty, peking duck, gets rave reviews. [Miami New Times]

• Fish tacos — the perfect way to end a day at the beach. Get them at H2O, an oceanfront cafe in Fort Lauderdale. [Miami Herald]

• Gail Shepherd unknowingly made a reservation at Aizia at the same time an adult entertainment industry convention had taken over the hotel, which is good, because that story is far more interesting than the descriptions of the meal, which apparently wasn't great. (Side note: the hotel and restaurant knew about this convention months beforehand. Why wouldn't they ask diners if they're OK with porn stars parading around during dinner when said diners make the reservation instead of when they're walking in the door?) [Broward-Palm Beach New Times]

Slainte Irish pub is, unfortunately, mostly a disappointment. The service was glacial, the music loud, and the food not that impressive. [Palm Beach Post]

Review Digest: Sugar And Spice And All Things Nice

• The party is at George's in the Grove, where the noise level is always set to loud, but the food is good. Also: Nutella pizza. Oh man. Yum. [Miami Herald]

• Eating at Fratelli Lyon is "really, honestly, literally just like being in Italy." [Miami New Times]

Myung Ga Tofu & BBQ seems to be the place to go for Korean food in the area. We're totally craving dumplings right now. [Miami Herald]

• Most everything's nice at Sugar n Spice, which gets two-and-a-half stars. [Miami Herald]

• Area restaurants are really hurting in this poor economy; Gail Shepherd talks to restaurateurs about how they've had to cut back and what they're doing to keep costs down. [Broward-Palm Beach New Times]

Review Digest: Chinese Controversy

• Commenters are giving poor Sara Liss flak about her omission of Tropical Chinese from her roundup of South Florida Chinese food. (She has a good reason, as she writes on her site: sometimes it's good to point out places besides the heavy hitters.) [Miami Herald]

• The service might be a little slow, and there's no a/c, but the food at Red Light sounds unbelievably good. [Miami New Times]

• The food is both eco-friendly (organic!) and healthful (nothing fried!) at Green Gables Cafe. [Miami Herald]

• Need a cup of coffee? Try one of these places. [Miami Herald]

• Gail Shephered is embracing the mackerel, which is not overfished, probably doesn't have tons of mercury, provides lots of heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, and is prepared beautifully at Blue Fish in Delray Beach. [Broward-Palm Beach New Times]

• Unlike most restaurants that bill themselves at "Mediterranean," Mazza's focus is Greek and Middle Eastern as opposed to Italian. [Miami Herald]

Review Digest: From Taiwanese Vegetarian To Deep South BBQ

Blu Pizza e Cucina has tasty pizza, but you have to navigate a "massive, maddeningly designed menu filled with so many typesetting tricks—stars, moons, diamonds, forks and knives, red flags, chartreuse boxes, nutrition notes, unattributed quotes—that you can barely discern whether you're ordering a meal or navigating some distant, dizzying land." [Miami Herald]

• Lee Klein looks for a few meals under $10. He finds that La Boite A Pizza isn't half bad. [Miami New Times]

• The Taiwanese-Buddhist fare at Shing Wang Taiwanese Vegetarian, Ice & Bubble Tea is sure to hit the spot. And there's bubble tea and shaved ice! [Miami Herald]

• There is excellent barbecue to be had on Sunrise Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale, and it's not too hard to find it. [Broward-Palm Beach New Times]

• The food is consistently very good at Cafe Seville and the rabbit is "rave-worthy." [Miami Herald]

Ironwood Grille doesn't pass muster. When it tries to be creative, it's not good. Otherwise, it's just OK. [Palm Beach Post]

• Did you know that restaurants have to pay $900 for the chance to participate in Miami Spice? Here's a good roundup of some of the better deals among the 100 or so restaurants participating this year. [Miami Herald]

George's in the Grove might not be the best place for a quiet dinner, but if you want good food in a fun atmosphere, looks like it's the place to go. [Miami New Times]

• Fuegovivo gets two-and-a-half stars, sounds a lot like the many other Brazilian churrascarias that seem to be all the rage these days. [Miami Herald]

• It's only been open for a month, but the Jam Cafe is already busy with people stopping in for a snack or a light meal. [Miami Herald]

• Scott Simmons found lots to love at Bar Louie. [Palm Beach Post]

• Lee Klein really enjoys his meal(s) at Por Fin, and he really loves the fact that you can get half portions. [Miami New Times]

• Stephen's Restaurant and New York-Style Deli is a New York oasis in Hialeah. [Miami Herald]

• The barbecue at Spoto's Oakwood Grill earns only mediocre marks from Gail Shepherd. [Broward-Palm Beach New Times]

• Here's a focus on three small, independent eateries in Broward County. [Miami Herald]

• So it's in a strip mall. Tentazione in Boynton Beach still serves excellent homestyle Italian food. [Palm Beach Post]

July 10, 2008

Review Digest: Lotsa Pasta

Ariston Restaurant gets three stars from Victoria Pesce Elliott, who particularly enjoyed the lamb. [Miami Herald]

• Lee Klein goes the Italian-Argentine (or is it Argentine-Italian) route at Bartolome in Miami Beach, where the grilled meats and salads are best. [Miami New Times]

• More Argentine-Italian on the Beach: Teodora's, which serves up huge portions. [Miami Herald]

• Looking for some bargains on South Beach? Here are a few ideas. [Miami Herald]

• French fries with rosemary and truffle oil...mmm. Of course, there's plenty more at Ilios, a Mediterranean restaurant in the Hilton in Fort Lauderdale that just got three-and-a-half stars. [Miami Herald]

• Gail Shepherd has a tendency to not get to the actual review part of her review until, say, four or five long paragraphs in. Normally, this would annoy us, but we're usually sufficiently entertained by the tangents. So, right: Saffron is good, and the tres leches is fantastic. [Broward-Palm Beach New Times]

• Charles Passy heads to the new Bice Bistro in Palm Beach Gardens (the more casual sibling of the other Bices in South Florida), where they make excellent butternut squash tortellini and lasagna. [Palm Beach Post]

July 03, 2008

• We're trying hard to imagine the tasajo ravioli with a black bean sauce at Jianella It sounds...intriguing. [Miami Herald]

• John Linn checks out a couple of local Mexican restaurant chains. [Broward-Palm Beach New Times]

June 26, 2008

Review Digest: Andu Keeps Aiming High, But Just Missing

• Two-and-a-half stars for Andu Restaurant & Lounge, which is hosting a grand opening party tonight, despite having been open for several months already. Stick to the simpler dishes there, which can be quite good. [Miami Herald]

Baleen is still coasting along, not really changing much about the mediocre menu. [Miami New Times]

• Linda Bladholm sums up Coral Rose Cafe in Hollywood as a place that serves "Paul Bunyan-sized breakfasts and good home-cooked food in a pleasant spot that marches along to its own quaint beat." [Miami Herald]

• The appeal of the new Stir Crazy location in the Shops at Pembroke Gardens is the made-to-order stir fry at the Market Bar. [Miami Herald]

• Gail Shepherd gives you two options for budget dining out in these difficult economic times: Grandlake Chinese Cuisine and Heart Rock Sushi. [Broward-Palm Beach New Times]

June 19, 2008

• Enrique Fernandez is back with his roundups, this time of diners in Miami-Dade. [Miami Herald]

• Fork on the Road visits Chuck's Grill, where you can get a whole grilled chicken family meal with rice and beans for $10.99. [Miami Herald]

• The new China Grill in Fort Lauderdale gets three stars. Did you know that happy hour on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays features $9 cocktails and free sushi and dim sum? [Miami Herald]

• This has got to be our favorite Gail Shepherd review; she visits Falafel Bistro in Coral Springs and just describes the food, energy and owner so well. It really sounds like a great place, and though cranberries in falafel sound a bit strange, we'd definitely be willing to give it a try. [Broward-Palm Beach New Times]

• The verdict on Zia's Restaurant & Lounge: it's a great place for drinks and dancing, but you might be better off getting dinner elsewhere. [Palm Beach Post]

June 12, 2008

Review Digest: How Are Kobe Club And Marilyn Manson Alike?

• The salads are fresh and good, but the best dishes include beef or cream at Miami Beach Argentine restaurant Bartolome. [Miami Herald]

• Lee Klein describes Kobe Club as the "steak house of Marilyn Manson's dreams," from the decor (flames, chain links, samurai swords hanging from the ceiling) to the spanking received when diners get their checks. [Miami New Times]

• Linda Bladholm looks favorably upon La Boite A Pizza. Sorry, but we're still not convinced that curry belongs anywhere near a pizza. [Miami Herald]

Cafe Chardonnay gets a first-date thumbs up and has heavenly-sounding desserts. [Broward-Palm Beach New Times]

• Need a seafood restaurant with a view in Broward? This article offers a few ideas: Rendezvous Bar & Grill, Catfish Deweys and CC's Original Fish Camp. [Miami Herald]

Review Digest: Dwayne Wade Needs Some Help In The Kitchen

• Enrique Fernandez has only good things to say about Abokado. [Miami Herald]

• The eighth annual Flapjack Flip-Off: it's a good read, and it has us hankering for some pancakes drenched in syrup. [Miami New Times]

• D Wade's still needs some time to improve. The service is efficient, but the food is lackluster. And by the way, if you go, pick up a menu, will ya? We've been promised menus that never materialize. [Miami Herald]

• Gail Shepherd checks out the raw food eateries in the area: Sublime in Fort Lauderdale and Soma Center Cafe in Lake Worth. [Broward-Palm Beach New Times]

• Don't dismiss Cut 432 because it's hip and trendy; the food is great too. Charles Passy highly recommends the short ribs which are cooked on a wood grill. [Palm Beach Post]

May 22, 2008

Review Digest: Andu Is Panned, Sort Of

• Interesting review for Andu Restaurant & Lounge today from Lee Klein. He seemed to enjoy a number of dishes there, but chides the restaurant for not going far enough cuisine-wise to match the cutting-edge decor. There also seemed to be a number of inconsistencies between what's written on the menu and what actually appears on the table. [Miami New Times]

• Enrique Fernandez really, really loved Por Fin Restaurant and especially recommends the fried eggs with potatoes. [Miami Herald]

• There's French fare at reasonable prices at Buena Vista Bistro. [Miami Herald]

• Everything sounds wonderful at Greek Express in Fort Lauderdale. So wonderful that we may have to go satisfy a falafel craving right now. [Miami Herald]

• No chance you'll leave hungry from Del Vecchio's Italian Fishery in Deerfield Beach, according to Gail Simmons. [Broward-Palm Beach New Times]

May 15, 2008

Review Digest: A Meat-Heavy Edition

• Victoria Pesce Elliott visits Domo Japones and for the most part enjoys it. Anyone else think it took her a while to get to it? It's been open several months, and it's in a trendy district; we would've thought she'd have visited it already. At any rate, three stars. [Miami Herald]

• The Mint Leaf is very good, but it's also pricey. Lee Klein especially recommends the murg tandoori. [Miami New Times]

• The Herald's Broward roundup today highlights some barbecue options for Memorial Day weekend: Renegade Barbeque, Jack's Bar-B-Q Smokehouse and Texas Hold 'Em in Fort Lauderdale. We're amused by the enraged comments left with the article by Miami residents who cannot believe that the BBQ joints mentioned are all in Broward. It's the Broward roundup, people. Says it right above the headline. [Miami Herald]

• Gail Shepherd provided a convenient summary of Cut 432 at the end of her review: "Food's great. Place is noisy. Sorta expensive. Really crowded. Cool customers. Nice service. Lots of wine. Skip the sauce." Sounds about right. We're thinking a Kobe burger sounds really good right about now... [Broward-Palm Beach New Times]

• Check out the photo of the lobster pot pie at Bourbon Steak. It just looks so decadent. Victoria Pesce Elliott names the restaurant the best steakhouse in town. [Miami Herald]

• Charles Passy re-visits R J Gator's and learns that despite the new ownership, the sports-bar staples are still tasty. [Palm Beach Post]

April 24, 2008

• A Fork on the Road stops at Raja's Indian Cuisine for some North Indian specialties. [Miami Herald]

• We don't quite get the reason for the accent on the o in Saffrón. Not like that's a Spanish word. And we're still going to pronounce it as its supposed to be in English. No matter how the name is pronounced, the food sounds wonderful. [Miami Herald]

• Apparently you're not supposed to eat oysters in months without an 'r,' which we did not know. So hurry before May arrives! Except, after what Gail Shepherd wrote about the oysters at The Whale Raw Bar and Fish House, you might not want to try the ones there. She did, however, enjoy the pizza at Giovanni's Coal Fire Pizza across the plaza. [Broward-Palm Beach New Times]

• Two good Mediterranean options with a focus on seafood on Miami Beach: La Marea and Maison D'Azur. [Miami New Times]

• A roundup of homey Italian places in Broward County. [Miami Herald]

• Your best bets at Fuji are the Chinese or pan-Asian dishes. [Broward-Palm Beach New Times]

Review Digest: Forte Di Asprinio Brings Style To Clematis

• Lee Klein returns to OLA and finds the cuisine still relevant. [Miami New Times]

• Three stars for A La Turca, owned by a Turkish man whose family used to run Italian restaurants. Thankfully, they've given up pasta for kebabs and baklava. [Miami Herald]

• Gail Shepherd heads south to the Keys, Little Palm Island to be exact, which is reachable only by sea or air. It's the perfect place to drop lots and lots (and some more even!) cash to impress your sweetie and hobknob with the super-wealthy. [Broward-Palm Beach New Times]

• India Garden in Coral Springs can be hit-or-miss, but hey, at least someone's trying to bring in some interesting, independent non-chain food around there. [Broward-Palm Beach New Times]

Forte Di Asprinio is different, stylish and accessible, and it's got a hell of a wine list. It still needs a little tweaking, but Charles Passy thinks the restaurant is just what Clematis Street needs. [Palm Beach Post]

Review Digest: Italian Edition

China Grill opened in Fort Lauderdale two weeks ago. Anyone else think it's a little early for a review? Gail Shepherd stops by regardless and enjoys the food and theater of the place. [Broward-Palm Beach New Times]

• The food at the fair sounds so much better than what it was when we were in high school: roast beef sundaes, meat pies, instant ice cream, Belgian waffle sticks with jam, salads and wraps. [Miami Herald]

Il Gabbiano offers up "a particularly rarefied hybrid of New York style Italian." [Miami Herald]

• The Herald went with an Italian theme this week: Vignetos Italian Grill is awarded three stars. [Miami Herald]

• Avoid the calamari, pizza and chocolate cake at La Locanda; everything else, however, was good. [Miami New Times]

March 27, 2008

• Enrique Fernandez gives the homey cuisine at Two Chefs Too three stars. [Miami Herald]

• Lee Klein loved the appetizers and dips at Ariston, which is in Ouzo's old spot. [Miami New Times]

• Oasis Churrasco Steak House is a bit out-of-the-way (unless you happen to live inside the Doral gated community where it's located), but the food is worth the drive. [Miami Herald]

• The story of a woman who gave up her career to make cupcakes and spend more time with her daughter. Given that she's now got a kiosk at Dadeland Mall and a number of regular restaurant/bakery customers, we'd say it was a smart move. [Miami Herald]

• Lee Klein recommends Adriana restaurant for the food, despite the chill he felt from the staff. [Miami New Times]

• In Broward, the Herald does a roundup of Middle Eastern/Mediterranean restaurants: Avra Taverna, Giorgio's Bakery & Bistro, and Al-Salam Mediterranean Food. [Miami Herald]

• The Famous Kosher Restaurant in Aventura fills the void that will soon be created by the upcoming closing of Rascal House. [Miami New Times]

• "Have you ever wondered what it might be like to go back in time — say, to a little European restaurant circa 1954? La Brochette has the answer. That it has it in Cooper City in 2008 is practically surreal." Also, the food sounds excellent. [Broward-Palm Beach New Times]

• It's not a full review, but Gail Shepherd likes what she's seen and eaten at Forte Di Asprinio so far. [Broward-Palm Beach New Times]

• So the ambiance doesn't necessarily transport you to France (Charles Passy felt like he was "in a condo community's misinterpreted version of a Bastille Day party"), but at least the food at Le Mistral is spot on. [Palm Beach Post]

March 13, 2008

Review Digest: Now We Know Where To Get A Good Reuben

• Enrique Fernandez rounds up the smallish restaurant scene in Key Biscayne. [Miami Herald]

• Random nugget of information, from a St. Patrick's Day-themed article about John Martin's: did you know that when the owners first opened the pub in 1990, they had to petition the city because of a 1926 law that banned public bars in Coral Gables? [Miami Herald]

There's a recipe from Chef Jerome Le Teuff at the Ritz-Carlton in Manalapan for a chocolate berry martini that involves vanilla vodka, white and dark Godiva liqueurs, and strawberry puree that sounds fantastic. [Palm Beach Post]

• The menu at Thai-Sushi Express may not be innovative, but the sushi and the Thai standards are good. [Sun-Sentinel]

Review Digest: Couples That Cook Together

• Quite a few married couples also run restaurants together, and surprisingly, they haven't killed each other yet. Seriously, we're not sure we'd be able to do that, so we congratulate any couple who stays together despite the stress of 80-hour workweeks in a restaurant kitchen. [Miami Herald]

Review Digest: All About Chocolate

• Hey look! We got a mention! Along with a number of other local food bloggers. [Miami Herald]

• Loud decor, a three-ring-circus-type atmosphere, cooks in tie-dye shirts and unimpressive food. Victoria Pesce Elliott's review of Michael's Kitchen makes us never want to set foot in there, yet she somehow still manages to give it two stars. We're not quite sure how that worked out. [Miami Herald]

Review Digest: Super Bowl Dips Galore

• As expected, there are tons of Super Bowl recipes in today's food sections. They're not reviews, and they're not terribly exciting (at least not to us...), but you know, they're there. If you need some help with the food for that game day party, check out any of the three major dailies.

• There's excellent Italian food to be had at Cantina 27 for half the price of the stuff you get on Ocean Drive. [Miami Beach]

Lemon Fizz Cafe's wraps are a hit. Did you know that the other locations of the restaurant chain are in Damascus, Syria? Also, they have free wireless internet! [Miami Herald]

• Another Italian review, this time for Il Gabbiano. The food there, according to Lee Klein, should silence the New Yorkers who whine on and on about the lack of quality Italian food here. (Although we have to say, it doesn't help that the owners spent 26 years in New York City.) [Miami New Times]

• Unlike most other local crepe places, the new Crepe Lounge on Key Biscayne might actually stick around. [Miami New Times]

Mozart Cafe is kosher, but open on Saturdays. The owners are Israeli, the chef is Caribbean-American, and the menu skips over the Mediterranean, North Africa and the Middle East. Intriguing mix, and it apparently makes for some great dishes. [Miami Herald]
